Harmful Algal Bloom: Deseronto, Bay of Quinte

Staff from the Belleville Area Office of the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks, discovered a potential Harmful Algal Bloom on Friday, September 7th, 2018 in the Bay of Quinte in between Yacht Club Lane and Main Street in Deseronto. Samples were taken by Ministry staff from the dock at the Yacht Club in Deseronto and will be forwarded to the lab for analysis.

ATV Safety Notice

To ensure public safety, The Town of Deseronto is embarking on a Public Awareness Campaign to help curb the inappropriate use of ATV's and Off-Road vehicles in our community and we need your help! 

We are currently working with the OPP and our By-law Enforcement Agency to increase patrols and the enforcement of our by-law and the Highway Traffic Act. We ask that you please participate by informing the OPP directly when you see activity that is not pursuant with the Town's By­law and the Off-Road Vehicles Act of Ontario.

Municipal Election 2018

This fall, Municipality of Deseronto voters will elect a 2018-2022 Municipal Council and School Board Trustees. 

Candidates Information 

Nominations 

Nominations may be filed in person with the Municipal Clerk or designate starting on Tuesday, May 1, 2018 until Thursday, July 26, 2018 during regular business hours (Monday to Friday, excluding Wednesdays, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) and on Friday July 27, 2018 (Nomination Day) from between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. using the prescribed forms. 

Nomination papers will not be accepted after the deadline.

 In accordance with the Municipal Elections Act, nominations must be filed using the prescribed forms, accompanied by the prescribed nomination filing fee. The filing fee is $200.00 for the office of Mayor and $100.00 for all other offices. The filing fee is payable by cash, debit, certified cheque or money order. 

A nomination must be signed by the candidate and may be filed in person or by an agent at the Office of the Municipal Clerk for the Municipality of Deseronto. If a nomination for a candidate is filed by an agent, a letter must be submitted at the time of filing which authorizes the agent to file on behalf of the candidate. The letter must be signed by the candidate and commissioned or notarized by a person authorized under the Commissioners for Taking Affidavits Act or Notaries Act. In addition to this letter, an agent must also provide a copy of the candidate’s ID to be retained on file. 

At the time of filing, a Consent to Release Personal Information form and a Declaration of Candidates Qualifications form must be completed and signed by candidate and submitted.

Candidate Qualifications

A person is qualified to be elected or hold office, who, as of the day they file their nomination is:

  • Residing in the local municipality, or is the owner or tenant of land in the local municipality, or the spouse of such a person
  • A Canadian Citizen
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Is not prohibited from voting as noted or otherwise, by law

Withdrawal of Nomination 

If a candidate wishes to withdraw completely, the candidate must file a written withdrawal of their candidacy, by no later than 2:00 p.m. on July 27, 2018 (Nomination Day) in the Clerk’s office.

Any withdrawals sent by mail, email or fax are not permitted, as it must be filed in the Clerk’s Office. 

Campaign Period 

The campaign period begins once a candidate has filed their nominations and ends on December 31, 2018. 

No person who proposes to be a candidate may solicit or accept contributions for election purposes or incur campaign expenses until a nomination paper has been filed with the Municipal Clerk. 

Upon filing, the candidate will receive the Estimated Maximum Campaign Expenses established by the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 and calculated by the Municipal Clerk. 

School Board 

Candidates for school board offices are encouraged to contact the Director of Education of the respective school board or the Clerk responsible for the election of those positions.

Advance Poll– October 13, 2018 – 10:00 am. to 4:00 pm.

Regular Voting Day– October 22, 2018 – 10:00 am. to 8:00 pm.
