Water Treatment

Notice: Watermain Flushing and Hydrant Testing 2024

The Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA) will be flushing watermains and testing fire hydrants between Monday May 13th and Friday May 17th. Flushing will take place between the hours of 8am and 3pm.

This preventive maintenance practice ensures the proper operation of fire hydrants and flushes accumulated sediment from the distribution system. While flushing is underway, short periods of low pressure and discoloured water can be expected. Any discolouration is temporary and is not a health hazard. To restore clarity, remove the aerator and turn on a cold water tap until the water runs clear. Residents are asked to minimize water consumption and avoid doing laundry when flushing activity is observed in your vicinity.

If you have any questions regarding the flushing program, please contact the Water & Sewer Department at 613-396-3436.

Trust the Tap - Walkerton Commemoration

This month marks 20 years since the water supply in Walkerton, Ontario was contaminated with E. coli and Campylobacter jejuni bacteria, resulting in the death of 7 people and severe illness affecting over 2,000 people.

Since May 2000, the Provincial government, Municipalities, Conservation Authorities and Source Protection Committees throughout much of Ontario have done tremendous work to improve the quality of municipal drinking water by following the recommendations of the Walkerton Inquiry which was led by Justice Dennis O’Connor.

As we remember the Walkerton tragedy, we acknowledge the hard work and integral part our municipality has played in the multi-barrier approach to safer drinking water.

The multi-barrier approach ensures that municipal drinking water is protected and improved from the source to the tap.  After 20 years, it is time to recognize the important work that has been done to make municipal drinking water safe.

Hydrant Flushing starts May 4th. at 8:00 am

Reminder that Hydrant Flushing will begin next week.

Remember that the only safe thing to flush is toilet paper. This is especially important during the COVID-19 pandemic, as the Town is attempting to preserve staff resources by limiting preventable service calls. Disinfectant wipes, paper towels and facial tissues do not break down and can cause clogs and costly damage to waste water systems and home plumbing systems.
