Great news! We have officially received the CD3 Boat Wash Station and it could be heading to your municipality in the Quinte watershed. Our goal is to encourage the removal and disposal of invasive species in our waterways.

This week, July 29 to August 4, the station is at the boat launch at Centennial Park in Deseronto.

Annual Sidewalk Inspection Program

Annually, the Public Works Department undertakes a sidewalk inspection program to sustain our sidewalks and identify areas that could be improved for pedestrian traffic. If you have witnessed the Public Works staff working on the sidewalks and wondered what the process is, let us explain.

Pictured above the Public Works Department is using a grinder to remove any height variances in the sidewalk panels that could pose a slip, trip or fall hazard to pedestrian traffic. If you’re walking in the community and notice what appears to be discoloured concrete with grooves, this is an area that has been levelled to improve the sidewalks of our community.

It’s summer time and we encourage everyone to get out, be active and enjoy our community.

Crossing Guards - 1 Permanent Part-time & 2 On-call Required

The Town of Deseronto is seeking individuals to assist in the safe passage of students/children at designated traffic crossings within the Town.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

·        Direct and guide students across streets during the school year, stopping traffic as required, in accordance with the Ontario Highway Traffic Act and the Occupational Health & Safety Act

·        Communicate crossing rules and other information to students and adults

·        Report the unsafe behaviour of children to school officials or to your Supervisor

·        Report to your crossing on time and stay for the entire shift

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

·        Interaction with children and the general public in a positive manner

·        Positive customer service skills

·        Available Monday to Friday 8:30 – 9:00 am and 3:20 – 4:00 pm, commencing Wednesday September 4, 2024:

·        A satisfactory CPIC with the vulnerable sector check

Join the O.P.P. Police Services Detachment Board!

The OPP Police Services Detachment Board represents a collaborative effort between Tyendinaga Township, the Town of Deseronto, and the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte.

 

We are seeking applications for a Community Representative on the Board. Help shape policing priorities, review reports, and monitor performance to contribute directly to your community. Board members receive an honorarium and serve until the 2026 Council term.

 

Applicants must meet eligibility criteria under the Community Safety and Policing Act, 2019, and undergo a police record check. MAIN STREET TUNNEL REHABILITATION PROJECT

The Town of Deseronto is currently working with Empipe Solutions Limited (ESL), Greer Galloway Group (GGG) and Quinte Conservation Authority (QCA) on required permitting and project scheduling for the re-lining of the underground tunnel located near 100 Main Street (west side of Centennial Park).

Deseronto Council approved the re-lining of the underground tunnel in the summer of 2024 during low run off periods (July-August). This rehabilitation comes with a performance guarantee of 10 years and a life expectancy between 25 and 50 years. The total cost of the project is estimated at $160,000 and is being funded by the Canada Community Building Fund (formerly known as Gas Tax).

The underground tunnel is critical infrastructure to control drainage from the northwestern portion of the community and divert water from residences and developed areas. There are no projected disruptions to residents during this project.

Poker Run & Rendezvous Arrives in Belleville July 12-13, 2024

A spectacular Poker Run & Rendezvous, proudly supported by Discover Belleville, will add to the excitement on the Bay of Quinte during the Belleville Waterfront Multicultural Festival.

The Poker Run will take place on Friday, July 12 through Saturday, July 13, 2024, with Meyers Pier serving as the hub in Belleville.

“A Poker Run is a game of chance and only the boat with the best poker hand wins. It’s all in the cards.

Whether your boat exceeds 120 mph or 200 mph, speed has no bearing on the winner,” the Poker Runs website stated.

At the final checkpoint, the envelopes are opened and the crew holding the best poker hand is declared the winner,” according to the website.

These powerful boats race at 120 km speeds on the open water over wakes and waves.

Participants experience being part of a well-organized, activity-oriented, fun-filled and safe event for the family.

Good Food & Good Baby Box Programs

The Deseronto Public Library is thrilled to announce its new partnership with two crucial community organizations: Community Care South Hastings, and the Community Development Council of Quinte. Through the joint efforts put forth by all three organizations, the Good Food Box and Good Baby Box programs have gained the opportunity for further growth in Deseronto.

 

The purpose of the Good Food Box and the Good Baby Box programs is to offer fresh, healthy, and nutritious fruits and vegetables at a fraction of the retail cost as well as formula, diapers, and wipes at a significantly reduced cost. The Good Food Box program is open to anyone who wishes to order, and the Good Baby Box is just a quick registration away.

 

Currently, Deseronto residents who order either (or both) programs pick up their produce and baby supplies at the Community Care South Hastings office on Main Street; but there is one hiccup – they are running out of room! “While these programs have always been open to any resident of Deseronto, regardless of income the partnership with the library will offer expanded physical space for the boxes, as well as later pickup options for those who work or have to be out of town during the daytime” says Lisa Campbell, Program Manager for CCSH Deseronto.

 

Additionally, Jim Mallabar, the Good Food Box Program Coordinator shares that “…with this new partnership we will be able to offer residents of Deseronto an extended window of time to pick up their Good Food Boxes on the fourth Tuesday of every month between 2-8pm at the Deseronto Public Library”. CDC-Quinte’s Good Baby Box Program Coordinator, Bev Heuving shares, “The Deseronto Public Library also offers a variety of family programs, so it is a natural fit to be able to partner with them to promote the Good Baby Box program.”

 

“We want to help our community access everything available to them. The CDC Quinte Good Food and Good Baby Box programs are an excellent way to address food security issues and if this partnership will reduce the barriers for our community, then we are more than happy to do that” says Julie Lane, the Library’s CEO.

 

As of July 23rd, all CDC Quinte Good Food and Good Baby Box purchases will still be made through the CDC Quinte Website or in person at the Community Care for South Hastings office, but all items will be picked up at the Deseronto Public Library on the designated pick-up date.

Deseronto Indoor and Outdoor Pickleball

 Are you an avid pickle ball player?

Are you looking for ways to become more active?

The Town of Deseronto is excited to announce that we will be offering indoor and outdoor pickleball for July and August at the Deseronto Community Centre (51 Mechanic Street)

Indoor Pickleball will take place on Mondays on two (2) indoor courts that will be set up by Town staff in the Multi-Purpose Hall in the Community Centre from 4:00p.m - 9:00p.m.

 Outdoor Pickleball  will take place on Thursdays on three (3) outdoor pickleball courts that will be set up by Town staff from 10:00a.m-2:00p.m.

Don’t have equipment? No problem!

The Town will provide 6 paddles and balls for the indoor and outdoor use and there is no cost to attend.

Military training in Hastings, Northumberland and Prince Edward counties of Ontario 

June 10, 2023 – Ottawa, Ont. – National Defence / Canadian Armed Forces

Residents in Hastings, Northumberland, and Prince Edward counties are advised that personnel from the Canadian Special Operations Forces Command will be conducting training in the area from June 12 to 28, 2024. Specifically, training will be centered around the communities of Belleville, Campbellford, Picton, Quinte West, Tweed and Stirling, Ontario.

Residents may notice an increase in military vehicles and aircraft, see uniformed and non-uniformed military personnel with personal firearms and hear noises associated with explosives and small firearms. Only simulated and blank ammunition and explosives will be used as part of these training exercises.

Military exercises in urban and rural environments that are unknown to our personnel leads to greater expertise that enable us to serve the national interest wherever we operate. The Canadian Special Operations Forces Command is extremely thankful for the support of local landowners and the understanding of the communities within which it conducts valuable training.
