Responsible Pet Ownership in the Town of Deseronto

The Town of Deseronto is committed to promoting responsible pet ownership and ensuring the safety of residents, visitors, and animals. Our Dog Control By-law establishes the rules for licensing dogs, keeping dogs under control, and protecting the community. The Town of Deseronto doesn’t regulate the control of cats (feline) through Municipal By-laws.

In situations after hours or where immediate attention is required , Frontenac Municipal Law Enforcement Inc. is contracted to provide animal control services to the Town of Deseronto, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Please call Frontenac Municipal Law Enforcement at 613-541-3213.

Dog Licensing

All dogs residing in the Town of Deseronto must be licensed.

Licensing Requirements

  • Every dog(older than 12 weeks) must be registered with the Town within one week of coming into your possession.

  • Dog licences expire annually on December 31.

  • Owners may be required to provide proof of current rabies vaccination.

  • Dogs must wear their Town-issued dog tag at all times (except when lawfully hunting).

  • Replacement tags are available if a current tag is lost or damaged.

Dog licence fees ($20.00 annually or $25.00 if purchased after April 1) are established through the Town's Fees and Charges By-law.

Dogs Running at Large

Owners are responsible for ensuring their dogs remain under their care and control at all times.

Dogs are considered "running at large" when they are:

  • Off the owner's property; and

  • Not under the care and control of the owner or another responsible person.

Dog Limit

Unless specifically exempted, a maximum of three (3) dogs may be kept at any residence within the Town.

Dangerous Dogs

Owners must take all reasonable precautions to prevent their dog from:

  • Biting or attacking people or animals.

  • Behaving aggressively or threatening public safety.

Where a dog has bitten or attacked, the Town may require the dog to be:

  • Leashed and muzzled while off the owner's property.

  • Securely confined on the owner's property.

  • Clearly identified through warning signage.

Additional requirements may apply under the Dog Owners' Liability Act.

Dog Waste

Owners are responsible for immediately cleaning up after their dogs on all public and private property, except on their own property.

Please help keep our parks, sidewalks and neighbourhoods clean.

Kennel Licensing

Anyone operating a kennel within the Town must obtain a valid annual Kennel Licence.

Kennels must comply with:

  • Municipal zoning requirements.

  • Building and health standards.

  • Animal welfare requirements.

  • Annual inspections where required.

Penalties

Failure to comply with the Dog Control By-law may result in:

  • Provincial Offence Notices (tickets)

  • Fines

  • Impoundment fees

  • Court proceedings where necessary
