Quinte Conservation Issues a Flood Watch Advisory for Lake Ontario and the Bay of Quinte

The rise in Lake Ontario’s water level has slowed and is likely to be nearing its seasonal peak. Water levels declined 3 cm during the cool, dry conditions this past week, but heavy rain is forecast in the coming days and levels are likely to stabilize or slightly increase again this coming week. Lake Ontario remains on track to peak in the coming week, well below the record-highs of 2017 and 2019. The International Lake Ontario – St. Lawrence River Board has forecasted that if the weather conditions continue within normal ranges for this time of year, the water levels are predicted to begin their seasonal decline in the coming weeks.

Unprecedented inflows from Lake Erie into Lake Ontario have kept water levels elevated over the past few months. Lake Erie remains near record-highs, and this will prevent any rapid lowering of Lake Ontario levels.

Residents are advised to check local weather and wave forecasts for warnings as high wind and waves can cause shoreline erosion and wave uprush. For information on flooding or for resources on Lake Ontario water levels, visit QuinteConservation.ca.

Staff will continue to monitor conditions and will provide an update if forecasts and conditions change.

A FLOOD WATCH STATEMENT notifies that the potential for flooding exists within specific watercourses and municipalities. Municipalities, emergency services and individual landowners in flood-prone areas should prepare.

This message will be in effect until (or updated before) May 29, 2020

Deseronto Public Transit – Open May 19th for Essential Trips ONLY

The Town of Deseronto is pleased to announce that Transit will open for Essential Trips beginning Tuesday May 19th. Deseronto Transit will be running a limited schedule for Essential Trips only, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. (Please note, we are fully accessible!!!)

Bookings can be made for these essentials:

·      Trips for groceries

·      Trips for work

·      Trips for medical purposes

·      Trips for your Banking needs

You can book your transit trip by calling the Transit Office at 613-396-4008 during office hours (8:30am-4:30pm M-F), we will NOT be booking using the online or app portal at this time

COVID 19 Precautions: Transit passengers are expected to follow physical distancing practices while using transit. Please be aware of your proximity to other passengers and the driver.  To stop the spread of Covid-19, If you are sick, please stay home!

Spring Brush and Leaf Curbside Pick-Up - May 25-28, 2020.

The Public Works Department will be performing a curbside spring clean-up of leaves and brush, starting Monday May 25, 2020 until Thursday May 28, 2020.

All material must be placed to the curb side no later than Monday May 25, 2020, as Town staff will only be collecting in each area once.

This is for brush and leaves ONLY; no other materials will be picked up.

Please note that this service is intended for general yard waste clean-up only and does not apply to tree removal.

Leaves are to be raked to the curb or placed in paper bags only.

Limbs and brush are to be bundled no longer than 5 feet in length and no more than 3 feet high, limbs larger than 6 inches in diameter will NOT be collected.

Material that is outside of the general service area will NOT be picked up.

COVID 19 Precautions: Please be patient with Town staff as the collection process may take longer than expected due to social distancing. Please do not approach Town staff during collection.

Thank you for your understanding.  We hope to possibly have a large item drop off in the fall if conditions improve.

Town of Deseronto to Re-open its Boat Launch on May 15, 2020.

Boats are being launched at the Deseronto boat launch.

On May 15th the boat launch at Centennial Park in Deseronto will reopen for local use only. At this time, travelling outside your local area is still discouraged by Public Health officials.

The Town is reminding boaters that Provincial emergency orders that prohibit the gathering of more than 5 people and physical distancing guidelines remain in place.

To safely enjoy boating during the COVID-19 State of Emergency, please observe the following safe use procedures:

·       Only launch your boat within your local municipality.

·       If another boater is launching a boat when you arrive, please queue in line, and remain in your vehicle until they are finished.

·       Do not congregate near the boat launch prior to or after launching your boat.

·       Maintain a physical distance of 2 metres (6 feet) apart from others while loading/unloading your boat and while on the waterways.

·       Follow safe and responsible boating practices to minimize the need for emergency service response.

Although the Town’s boat launch will be re-opening, there will be no docks or public washroom facilities available at this time.  The playground equipment and park facilities remain closed.

Joint By-law Enforcement Agreement

Deseronto, ON - The Town of Deseronto is pleased to announce a joint initiative with the Township of Stirling Rawdon, the Township of Madoc, the Municipality of Tweed, and the Township of Tyendinaga. As of May 2020, Animal Control and By-law Enforcement Services will be handled by the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires.

Members of the Community should contact the Administration office to file an official complaint or concern.  The municipality will forward the information to the Joint Service Administration for the Commissionaires to follow up. 

The Enforcement Officer will work for all five municipalities and will respond to complaints or concerns received through our Joint Service Administration.  As this is a new service, please be patient as we work through the process and move forward with the enforcement of various by-laws.

FIRE AND BURN BAN LIFTED

MEDIA RELEASE

MAY 6, 2020

Fire Chief Dale Loney has lifted the burn ban for the Town of Deseronto.  Residents who had an approved permit for 2019, and have not made any alterations or changes, can have a fire, but will be required to apply for a 2020 permit when the Town lifts the state of Emergency.  Residents are reminded to abide by the Town’s burning by-law 14-16 and follow the rules outlined there in.  A chiminea burn permit application can be obtained online, however no new 2020 permits will be issued at this time.

Please be advised that the Province has not lifted the state of emergency. Groups of more than five are not permitted and social distancing guidelines and household restrictions still apply.

2020 Emergency Preparedness Week

Emergency preparedness week 25th Anniversary

Preparing for an emergency is important and is something everyone should do.  By taking a few simple steps, you can be better prepared to face a range of emergencies and minimize the impact on yourself and your family.

Emergency Preparedness Week (EP Week) is May 3-9, 2020.

Emergency Preparedness Week encourages Canadians to take three simple steps to become better prepared to face a range of emergencies:

  • Know the risks

  • Make a plan

  • Get an emergency kit

Hydrant Flushing starts May 4th. at 8:00 am

Reminder that Hydrant Flushing will begin next week.

Remember that the only safe thing to flush is toilet paper. This is especially important during the COVID-19 pandemic, as the Town is attempting to preserve staff resources by limiting preventable service calls. Disinfectant wipes, paper towels and facial tissues do not break down and can cause clogs and costly damage to waste water systems and home plumbing systems.

Fire Ban and Fireworks

The Town reminds residents that there is a FULL PROVINCE WIDE FIRE BAN in effect. Under this ban ABSOLUTELY NO fires are allowed.

The Fire Department asks that residents refrain from the use of fireworks, open fires, and the use of chimineas.

Fires can start in a variety of ways and the Deseronto Fire Department encourages residents to reduce the risk of fire. As a result, the Town of Deseronto will restricting the use of FIREWORKS during this time.

The Town of Deseronto appreciates the patience and cooperation of town residents at this time.

Fishing Season Guidelines – May 2, 2020 – Boat Launch Closed

Barricades for Closed Deseronto Boat Launch are set up in April 2020.

This Saturday May 2nd is opening day for Walleye and Northern Pike.

The Province declared a State of Emergency due to the COVID 19 Pandemic on March 17, 2020. The order restricts gatherings, use of public buildings and public spaces, and encourages physical distancing.

Please note:

The Deseronto Boat Launch is currently CLOSED due to the Provincial Emergency Order. The launch will reopen once the Province lifts its current restrictions.

A reminder that the OPP is policing the COVID 19 Emergency Order and that gatherings of more than 5 persons are prohibited.

Discover GET OUT! Kids' CLUB for great nature-based educational activities and ideas that will keep your family engaged and entertained! 

This new and exciting online club is a project of the Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory with funding from Nature Canada's NatureHood program.

Nature provides an endless source of things to explore, discover, think about, and discuss. Take some time to go slow, be curious, apply all your senses, be kind, and have fun! 

For all sorts of fun stay at home activities be sure to check the On-Line Deseronto Public Library Programs.

NOTICE OF WATERMAIN FLUSHING AND HYDRANT TESTING

The Deseronto Water and Sewer Department will be flushing watermains and testing fire hydrants between May 4th. and May 15th. Flushing will take place normally between the hours of 8:00 am and 3:00 pm, Monday to Friday. 

This preventive maintenance practice ensures the proper operation of fire hydrants and flushes accumulated sediment from the distribution system.  While flushing is underway, short periods of low pressure and discoloured water can be expected. 

Any discolouration is temporary and is not a health hazard.  To restore clarity, remove the aerator and turn on a cold water tap until the water runs clear.

Residents are asked to minimize water consumption and avoid doing laundry when flushing activity is observed in your vicinity.

The Helping Hands Food Bank would like to thank everyone in Deseronto and Tyendinaga Township for their wonderful support over the last few weeks.

Your food donations and financial support have made a difference in our efforts to help those who are less fortunate. The phone calls of support and offering of volunteer hours shows the heart of our communities.

We also thank our unselfish regular volunteers who jumped to the forefront during this unprecedented event and went beyond their normal duties.
