QUINTE CONSERVATION ISSUES A LEVEL 1 LOW WATER CONDITIONS STATEMENT
A Level 1 Low Water Condition has been issued for the Quinte Conservation Watershed including the regions of the Moira, Napanee, and Salmon Rivers as well as all of Prince Edward County.
Despite higher than average water levels on the Bay of Quinte and Lake Ontario, minimal precipitation throughout the last few months has contributed to lower than average groundwater and surface water conditions throughout the watershed. The Quinte region has seen a dynamic shift in the spring weather and associated precipitation patterns in recent months. At the end of a very wet April, the Quinte region was well above seasonal accumulated rains, with well above normal stream flows. A sudden and large decline of precipitation in May and June has resulted in dry conditions, with a recent quick and noticeable decline in stream flows.
Residents and businesses are asked to reduce water usage by 10 percent for non-essential uses which includes taking shorter showers, turning the tap off to wash dishes and brush teeth, and watering plants at night and when possible, using rain barrel water to do so. Quinte Conservation encourages residents experiencing low water to report their conditions using an online form. The form can be found at: https://arcg.is/1zX8b5 or on the main page of the Quinte Conservation website, along with tips for water conservation, at www.QuinteConservation.ca.
A Level 1 Low Water Condition means the potential for water supply problems has been identified. A Level 1 condition is managed through existing programs of the Conservation Authorities, municipalities and other key provincial agencies. Low water conditions are ranked as Level 1, 2 or 3 based on a prolonged period of low flows or precipitation. A Level 1 is the least severe and Level 3 is the most severe.
This message will be in effect until (or updated before) August 27, 2020.

SHORELINE CONDITIONS STATEMENT ISSUED FOR THE BAY OF QUINTE AND LAKE ONTARIO
Quinte Conservation has downgraded the Flood Watch issued on May 15th for Lake Ontario and The Bay of Quinte to a Shoreline Conditions Statement.
Quinte Conservation uses lake elevation measurements of 75.3 m to determine a general flood line above which some properties will begin to be affected by water over the bank of the shoreline. As the lake level is now below this elevation and is not expected to rise above it this year, a Shoreline Conditions Statement has been issued.
Lake Ontario’s water level continues to decline and was recorded at 75.25 m yesterday. This level is 19 cm above average and 65 cm below the recorded average set this time in 2019. Water Levels are expected to continue to slowly decline over the coming weeks and months.
Residents are reminded to take precautions along shorelines as unstable/unsafe banks may exist due to recent erosion and wave action. Flood induced floating debris may cause issues for boaters. Those with properties in low-lying or flood prone areas should continue to monitor forecasts for storms and high winds. For information on flooding or for resources on Lake Ontario water levels, visit QuinteConservation.ca.
Staff will continue to monitor conditions and will provide an update if forecasts and conditions change.
A SHORELINE CONDITIONS STATEMENT: a FLOOD OUTLOOK STATEMENT gives early notice of the potential for flooding on the Great Lakes based on weather and lake conditions and water safety information.

Town Hall Reopening - The municipal office will be reopening to the public on July 6, 2020. Protocols have been put in place to maintain physical distancing, please be patient and follow procedures. We can only accommodate 2 patrons in the entrance at a time.
Meetings with specific staff members will be by appointment only, please call ahead.
Billings and Collection - Late payment fees for Water/Sewer and for Property taxes will be waived until July 31st.
Bag Tags— The two free (untagged) bags of garbage per week limit will be ending with the reopening of Town Hall. Bag tags will be required on all garbage on July 10, 2020.
Deseronto Food Bank- The Food Bank located at 312 Edmon St. will be open July 16 and August 13, 2020.
Deseronto Public Library – Curbside pick-up is underway at the Library. A variety of online programs are available online at http://www.deserontopubliclibrary.ca/ .
Fire Department – Residents MUST have a burn permit to have a fire. Applications can be found online. Please complete the form and drop it off or email it with payment to Town Hall. An inspection of your chiminea will then be arranged with the Fire Chief.

TORONTO ― In consultation with the Chief Medical Officer of Health, the Ontario government has extended the provincial Declaration of Emergency under s.7.0.7 of the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act to July 15, 2020. This extension, approved by the Ontario Legislature earlier today, provides Ontario with the additional time, flexibility, and the necessary tools to safely and gradually allow more places to reopen, while continuing to support frontline health care providers in the fight against COVID-19.
Please be advised there is a road closure - Brant St between Cross St. and North St. At least until noon June 24, 2020.

A reminder to residents about fireworks, the sale of fireworks, and the setting off of fireworks in Deseronto -
The setting off of fireworks and firecrackers is prohibited in the Town of Deseronto at any time other than on the days proclaimed for:
the observance of Victoria Day; and
Canada Day, or
A permit may be secured from the Town Clerk, and every display so authorized shall be carried out only under the supervision of a “Fireworks Supervisor” from the Fire Department of the Town of Deseronto.
The sale of fireworks and firecrackers is also prohibited in the Town of Deseronto at any time other than the period of ten days immediately preceding and including the days mentioned above, and then only to a person 18 years of age and over.

TORONTO — Today, the Ontario government announced that it is getting more people back to work and more recreational activities open by moving forward with a regional approach to Stage 2 of reopening the province.
In consultation with the Chief Medical Officer of Health and local health officials, the government is easing restrictions in communities where it is safe to do so, based on trends of key public health indicators such as lower rates of transmission, increased capacity in hospitals, and progress made in testing.
Effective Friday, June 12, 2020 at 12:01 a.m., the province will increase the limit on social gatherings from five to 10 people across the province, regardless of whether a region has moved to Stage 2. Additionally, all places of worship in Ontario will also be permitted to open with physical distancing in place and attendance limited to no more than 30 per cent of the building capacity to ensure the safety of worshippers.

Dear Town of Deseronto,
We are very eager to be opening a second site for our practice at our Deseronto
office, effective June 15th, 2020. The situation with COVID-19 has caused many changes
within the community and surrounding areas. While we are very fortunate to be in an
area with great community leaders and frontline workers who continually work to have
flattened the curve, this has not prevented the impact COVID-19 has had with the planning
for our office in Deseronto, causing the unexpected delay of our official opening. We had
initially hoped to open our doors to the community in March, however, at the peak of
COVID-19, this certainly was not possible.
We have been and continue to be available to our patients in the community virtually
and by phone. In person, we are excited to start seeing essential visits in the Deseronto
community starting June 15th. We are excited to be a part of the community, working
alongside our allied health and community team members.
As always, we are so grateful for the ongoing support, patience, and understanding of
our community partners and the people in Deseronto and immediate region.

This month marks 20 years since the water supply in Walkerton, Ontario was contaminated with E. coli and Campylobacter jejuni bacteria, resulting in the death of 7 people and severe illness affecting over 2,000 people.
Since May 2000, the Provincial government, Municipalities, Conservation Authorities and Source Protection Committees throughout much of Ontario have done tremendous work to improve the quality of municipal drinking water by following the recommendations of the Walkerton Inquiry which was led by Justice Dennis O’Connor.
As we remember the Walkerton tragedy, we acknowledge the hard work and integral part our municipality has played in the multi-barrier approach to safer drinking water.
The multi-barrier approach ensures that municipal drinking water is protected and improved from the source to the tap. After 20 years, it is time to recognize the important work that has been done to make municipal drinking water safe.
